In recent times, online fundraising has experienced immense growth and continues to reach new heights with each passing year. Why? For starters, online fundraising and crowdfunding platforms are designed to make donations easier, faster and more transparent – both for the organization and the donor. Platforms like ours have also become essential for organizations in acquiring donors, who tend to be worth much more than offline donors.
However, growth and progress rarely come without pain points. One in particular is that online fundraising platforms have recently become targets for online credit-card fraud, a scary proposition considering the prevalence of fraud. In fact, a 2012 report states that 42 percent of U.S. residents experienced fraud in the previous five years.
According to a recent article published by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, “the reason charities and nonprofits are targeted is they want to set [online donations] up with as few hurdles to funding as possible.” While this is great for attracting donors, it can leave the door wide open for credit-card thieves.
It’s a tricky situation for online donation solution providers, because payment systems need to be well-protected against fraudulent charges, yet simple enough to eliminate donor friction.
At Kimbia, we make keeping our clients and their donors secure a priority. As a Software-as-a-Service platform it is our job to ensure that our online fundraising solutions are always a step ahead by integrating the latest security technologies. That’s why we are taking multiple measures to ensure our platform is well-guarded against credit-card fraud, including:
- Continuing to keep clients updated on some important steps in regards to security as the industry evolves. For example, encouraging the nonprofits we work with to use the latest security standards, such as enabling CVV2 protection (i.e. providing the three or four numbers on the back of the card) for any credit-card purchase.
- Identifying new ways to innovate around what the payment industry is doing to counter fraud. While much of this innovation is not donor or customer-facing, it helps us continue to reduce friction for the donor while ensuring that the data remains secure. We also have patents pending around these efforts. Most of these innovations are in production and are used by most, if not all of our customers.
- We support unique, embeddable forms that were developed with security in mind. Our clients can easily distribute them across multiple sites to spread awareness and increase engagement, but regardless of where the form resides, the processes will always remain secure via our platform.
At Kimbia, our platform and solutions are built around providing “frictionless,” transactions for the organizations we work with. We work with all of the payment and banking industry best practices and services to provide as fraud-free an environment as we can for our clients. We believe online fundraising should make it easier, rather than more difficult for an organization to raise money. It is our job to make the fundraising process as seamless of an experience as possible for our clients’ donors.
